Manager-Business & Commercial Shale Gas

This position may be based in either Calgary, Alberta (Canada) or Dallas, Texas.
As a member of the Canadian Division’s Shale Gas Exploitation and Development (E&D) leadership team, this position is responsible for coordinating the business unit’s Industry Intelligence Relations and Analysis, Commercial, Strategic Planning, Business Development, Economic Analysis, Financial Reporting and Business Support/Control functions.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Primary:
Industry Intelligence, Relations and Analysis – Act as Nexen’s “eyes and ears” in the marketplace for information related to future, current and historical shale gas activities and technologies; – Maintain and further develop current knowledge of assigned markets through research and development/utilization of professional relationships; – Perform analysis on and validate shale gas competitor and industry activities, trends and KPIs and integrate findings with Nexen’s data/plans; – Steward joint venture and industry body partnerships, relationships and negotiations; – Represent Nexen’s interests with the Horne River Producers Group and play an active role in influencing policy and actions;
Commercial – In conjunction with Marketing, support and make business case recommendations on the strategic development of commercial infrastructure including gas take-away capacity, plants/pipelines, negotiation and execution of relevant commercial agreements, etc.; – Maintain a high level of commercial competency and contribute to the development of commercial acumen through market surveillance, participation in industry collaborations and studies, etc. – Manage commercial relationships;
Strategic Planning & Business Development – Participate as a member of the Shale Gas Management team with regard to strategic planning and business planning; – Function as the liaison between the divisional planning group and the business; – Coordinate and review activities related to AOP, Strategic Plan and Outlook development, implementation and changes; – Draft reports, provide information on, and respond to queries related to the AOP, Strategic Plan, Board Reports, and Press Releases; – Consistent with our NEBC strategy, support the generation, development and implementation of new business opportunities;
Economic Analysis – Coordinate with the E&D team to provide project economic analysis and evaluation support for capital planning, risk analysis, and investment decisions; – Create and run economic models;
Secondary:
Financial Reporting – Coordinate with Canadian’s Finance group to ensure: – The business unit¿s financial and accounting obligations are stewarded; – Financial policies, processes and procedures are implemented effectively; – Accurate financial / budget controls reporting and business management information are provided in a timely fashion to the business unit and to the Company; – Appropriate analysis is conducted to understand the performance of the business, manage risk, and thereby support sound business decisions; – Facilitate explanation of variances to AOP and Outlook to the Finance team; – Identify accounting policy issues and engage appropriate resources to review/resolve; – Lead capital administration tracking for the business;
Business Support & Controls – Lead the development of business management processes that support delivery of shale gas strategies. This includes business and operating models and their supporting operational procedures; – Participate in the development of business and operations procedures and ensure they are communicated and utilized effectively. These could include any required gas plant/pipeline/platform operations interface procedures; – Monitor the performance of key support functions, including in house operational support functions such as Drilling and Facilities, to maximize business efficiency and develop reporting systems to monitor and report their performance; – Oversee information and records management support; – Champion the effective use of SAP; assist with SAP process and reporting improvements; – Identify control and process issues and where appropriate, recommend and implement changes.
Education/Experience: – Bachelor’s degree and professional status in a technical discipline (Engineering, Geology, Geophysics) or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Finance, Accounting); – A Master’s degree is an asset; – Professional designation in accounting or financial analysis is an asset; – 10+ years of upstream, unconventional gas exploitation and development technical, business, planning and/or financial management experience; – Strong mix of technical and business/financial aptitude is required; – Shale gas experience and knowledge is preferred; – Strong research skills and the ability to seek out and validate industry and financial information; – Solid network of industry contacts and the ability to leverage those contacts to improve market intelligence; – Membership in oil and gas industry/professional associations and active participation in industry events and networking opportunities; – Proven track record of success in guiding business development activities and establishing the business and commercial strategic plans for new resource plays; – Strong knowledge of financial reporting and accounting principles; – Ability to understand business and operational workflows and formalize these flows into processes/systems; – Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, leadership and negotiation skills.
